I remember my third grade teacher decorated our classroom with Christmas decorations, but told us that elves put everything up and even had little elf footprints on our desks as prove. I think that teachers should try to connect with their students more by creating excitement and creativity into the classroom.

I think teaching history would be fun to teach by using Imaginative Education. I think dividing the class into countries and then having them learn about the war in groups, learning and then sharing with the class their countries participation in the war. We could spend class time talking about the war from different angles because in general history shows the country the students are from in the best light possible. I think it would be helpful for the students to understand the real history behind the war. I'm specifically thinking WWII for this activity, but it really could be any war. The classroom could be set up with flags representing the countries and each group can have it's own headquarters in the classroom. I think students would be interesting in learning about history if they felt more directly connected to it.
In order to teach young children basic phonetic would be The Cat in the Hat or any Dr. Seuss books. Something I could teach about in a creative way. Something I might teach about in my classroom is about dinosaurs. We could decorate the classroom how it may have look millions of years ago when dinosaurs walked the earth. When we are in our new dinosaur world we can make fossils out of paper mache and also use this as decoration. This could inspire a lot of great thought for furthering our learning. We could research things that dinosaurs ate and resources they needed and make commercials for dinosaurs using our dinosaur themed backdrop.
Imaginative learning lends really well with art! One of the content areas for art is to teach my students about various artists. When thinking of this lesson, so many ideas came to mind. If I’m teaching about VanGogh, I can tell them the story of how he cut off his ear because he wanted to show a women he loved her. I also have a VanGogh doll I could pass around with a removable ear. I think my students would get a kick out of that story and hopefully remember it for years to come. Or if I am teaching them about an Ohio artist such as Dale Chihuly, I could tell them how he lost his eye and I could make them create something while wearing an eye patch.
Imaginative Education

Something I would want to teach my children would be about Martin Luther King Jr. and how far America has come with the elimination of segregation. There are so many children’s books out there about the life of Martin Luther King Jr., for example The Picture Book of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as songs for the movement Martin Luther King Jr. stood for in the elimination of segregation. Some activities I would do are dramatic play exercises for sure. I think this would be the best way to fully understand what people truly went through. We could read a story to the class about Martin Luther King Jr. and the movement and then act out the story around the class. For examples creating segregation groups and use the dramatic play “freeze shot” to describe the fights and conflicts African Americans went through. As well as seeing songs of the movement and creating signs for pickets of protest as they would have done for equal rights.
I plan to teach science so being creative is a must in any of the science courses so that students will remain engaged. One cocept to teach is about the shortest difference between two point. I would tell a story that helps to illustrate that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. As I tell the story, I will have two volunteers from the class act it out. This way the students can see the events as they unfold and visually see why it does one person longer than the other, even they started at the same point and ended up at the same spot.
As I have mentioned previously, I’m extremely interested in mental illnesses, so, odds are, if I ever end up teaching, it will be about mental illnesses. There are many stories, such as case studies, that can be used to teach about these mental illnesses. These case studies are real stories about people suffering with mental illnesses, and can be used to help students understand all of the aspects of the issue. I am currently learning about many mental illnesses in one of my classes, and my professor uses a lot of these real life examples. I have found that this is extremely helpful for me to understand all of the different disorders. It makes it much easier for me to understand, rather than just rattling off a list of signs and treatments.

A big activity that I would do, that I think would be very helpful, is a case analysis. Students would each be given a case, a patient, and there would be a story about their life and what is going on with them. The students would then have to figure out what mental illness the patients is suffering from, and how to treat it.
I have done case analyses.
One topic that would be taught about is Slavery. There are tons and tons of literature about slavery and you can even have students research the songs that were sung and signs that people looked for when escaping through the Underground Railroad. I think this is more of a 6th grade learning experience. A great program (that unfortunately is not around anymore) that was incredible with imaginative learning that I think really should be established again is Camp Joy. This camp had the best activity for learning about this topic and the stories because it literally put you through what the slaves went through in their escape with an Underground Railroad experience. They have a ton of land and set up this huge Underground Railroad stimulation. It starts off with you being treated so terribly and auctioned as a slave and you are split up into the groups based on who bought you and from there you spend the rest of your night on a stimulated escape through trails and woods and open areas where you had to be very careful. You run into many obstacles like getting caught or someone who tried to help your group escape getting killed. During this experience you were not allowed to read any signs because you had to be illiterate. In the end you find out which groups escaped and which groups were caught. This experience teaches you so much because you are not just reading about it (well, in this case you can’t read at all) but you are almost living it. It is so scary but so informational at the same time and some of it you never forget.
Camp Joy was classroom drama (like we did with Dr. Scheurer) on steriods.
• One thing that I will need to teach in the future to my students is the topic of outer space and the solar system. Thus topic has a lot of history for me to teach my students. I could teach them about the space race between the US and Russia, and sputnik. I could also teach them about Neil Armstrong being the first man on the moon. Another topic to teach them would be how the technology has advance. In addition, I could teach them about our solar system and the planets.

• There are many activities that I could do to engage my student’s imaginations and help them grasp this large subject. One great activity that I am currently doing in Education 214 is a drama on space travel. This would help students feel apart of the experience and engage them. Also we could create model solar systems on paper or make them three dimensional with foam spheres and paint. Lastly, I could assign students to an astronaut/spaceship/mission and have him or her research them. They could prepare a presentation to give to the rest of the class.
Our travels in outer space are extremely interesting!!
