\n As a future social worker, deficit needs definitely apply, as they do in all other profession. Psychically, the job needs to provide an income with which I can feed, house, and cloth myself with. I will be working in a safe environment. Hopefully, I will be mainly in an office while perhaps having to go on site to people\u2019s homes or to some kind of shelter. I hope to feel a sense of belonging by being accepted and respected by both coworkers and clients; this will help my self-esteem by feeling good about myself and the work I do. I will become self-actualized in many ways. It will be my job to help and make people\u2019s lives better. I can take pride in the fact that I provide this kind of service daily. In order to help others, my clients for example, to be self-actualized by being a resource to get their lives or certain problems under control. Without stressors in life, people can focus on things that make them the best they can be.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61072858","dateCreated":"1355255158","smartDate":"Dec 11, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"kleitschuh","url":"http:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kleitschuh","imageUrl":"http:\/\/c1.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"http:\/\/capitaledpsych.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61072858"},"dateDigested":1532724735,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Maslow Responses ","description":"Maslow

\n1. How do deficit needs apply to the professional job you intend to have?
\n
\nWith my majors I would love to get a job working with students with special needs. With this setting I would see a lot of the students I will work with might not meet the deficit needs that you must meet according to Maslow. I would also like to use my early childhood major to help an inner city school. There would be children who do not have the basic needs met, physiological and safety. They could come from a poverty background and not be properly taken care of. For example, a child could come in with the same clothes on everyday without showering or are not properly nourished with breakfast in the morning before school. I think it\u2019s important to know your students and their home lives through a close teacher student and teacher parent relationships.
\n
\n2. How do self-actualization needs apply?
\n
\nSelf-actualization for students from a special needs point of view have to be changed around from Maslow\u2019s definition. I think the Self-actualization for special needs would be more about learning to function without assistance, this would be functioning in every area of life such as problem solving to social skills. For the inner city life I would say self-actualization comes in for those students who realize how they should be properly cared for. They probably realize the world they live in is what it is and there is nothing they can do about it but to strive to come out of it stronger using school as their escape. I think as a teacher it would be important to push using imagination with these students because they could create a world of goals and encourage them to reach for these dreams.
\n
\n3. How can you support the fulfilling of self-actualization needs of others either personally or professionally?
\n
\nAs I stated in the last question I believe that creating a world of potential for the students is a great way to push the children to success. Everyone should have someone behind them to push them towards their dreams. I know I owe some much to my family and friends for pushing me to reach my goals and dreams in life. We all need to know that we can do whatever we strive to be if we put in the time and effort to achieve it.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61053374","dateCreated":"1355082582","smartDate":"Dec 9, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"escott91","url":"http:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/escott91","imageUrl":"http:\/\/c1.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"http:\/\/capitaledpsych.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61053374"},"dateDigested":1532724735,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"erin scott response","description":"I hope to get an elementary art teaching position, which applies to the deficit need \u201csafety\u201d because of security of employment and even resources and health because of benefits I\u2019d have from being employed. I would hope that my job would also help with self-actualization because I\u2019d be actively pursuing creativity and problem solving by working with students to teach them art. In addition, gaining morality, lack of prejudices, and acceptance of facts would come naturally in the education field because I would be invested in my students who would teach me those things without them ever really trying or knowing. By knowing about Maslow\u2019s hierarchy, I am already doing half of the work to actively support the fulfilling of self-actualization needs both personally and professionally. How do deficit needs apply to the professional job you intend to have?
\nIf the most basic needs of children in a school are not being met it as an additional responsibility as a teacher to be able to take note of this and take action. If you notice that students come to school hungry or have bruises that were not there before and are continuing to appear this is something very serious that you need to take upon yourself to handle. Making sure basic needs of students are being met are imperative to help ensure they are able to learn while being well cared for because there is not one without the other.
\n2. How do self-actualization needs apply?
\nOne way related to the last topic is students who are older and more capable for doing for themselves, late teens and high school aged children, understanding that the need to make healthy choices. Before realizing this students could choose to stay up all night or only eat candy and junk food that would make it harder for them to perform within the classroom. After realizing that they are at an age where if they want to do well they have to make good decisions for themselves and it is up to them what kind of student they want to be.

\nA personal example could be something that is going on currently with on of my friends. She is very behind in her classes and only has a small amount of time to start on\/complete assignments. We are trying to help her reach self actualization about needing to start on assignments in order to get it done in time. She currently feels that the last week of the semester will be enough time but we have been trying to support her understanding by helping tell her about the courses and what needs to be done and inviting her over to study on work on assignments with us so we can help explain assignments and try to get her inspired about completing class work.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"60983674","dateCreated":"1354416824","smartDate":"Dec 1, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"mgreathousemarshall","url":"http:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mgreathousemarshall","imageUrl":"http:\/\/c1.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"http:\/\/capitaledpsych.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/60983674"},"dateDigested":1532724735,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Maslow","description":"1. \nThere are some children who come in who do not have the basic needs met, physiological and safety. The come to school and have not eaten or they may have to take a dangerous route to school. There are so many issues that children face that we as teachers feel is just a given, especially for children that live in the inner city. We ignore these issues when we try to teach, not thinking that these issues can cause a student to be disengaged in the class due to their focus being on what they are missing (food, shelter, love, or even sleep).
\n2. How do self-actualization needs apply?
\nSometimes self-actualization comes in for those students who realize that they have to do things on their own. It is their job to push themselves and strive for something better. They realize that their world is what it is and there is nothing they can do about it. They begin to move and create a world that allows them to reach their full potential and achieve the goals that they have setup for themselves.

\nDeficit needs apply to the professional job I intend to have in working with students with special needs because a lot of the students I will work with will not meet the deficit needs that you must meet according to Maslow. Maslow if not conduct his research on people who have mental or physical disabilities, he apparently was against that notion so it is hard to say where it really applies. Self-actualization for students with mental\/physical disabilities would probably need to be slightly modified from Maslows definition. I think for Self-actualization with these students it would be more along the lines of being able to function well in the home possibly without assistance, ability to function in society, developing problem solving skills and acceptance of facts and reality. I think that I can help students fulfill self-actualization needs by helping to provide them with an individualized education plan that would really help them develop and show improvement as well as helping them develop in other areas that would help them function well outside of the classroom. I can also do my best to look into assistive technology devices that could work for that student and help get them a step closer to fulfilling their self-actualization needs.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"58246372","body":"Self-actualization does apply to the whole population insofar as most people want to have a satisfying work life and social life.
