They take a certain about of questions and each student is expected to respond to them and give a set answer. Their scores are based on how well they were able to answer the questions. In no way does it show how smart or not smart your children are. What they can do is help us understand where your child may be struggling. It could be comprehension of the material (that’s something that can be corrected), it may be they are poor test takers (again something that can be corrected), or it may point to something a little more serious. Keep in mind that not all children think alike. Whereas something may make perfect sense to one, it does not to yours. The most effective thing I can tell you is to look at how well they scored against other children in their area (grade level, age, school district and even subject matter). Now depending on what type of test that is given, we can make an assumption as to how well your child is doing. But again the comparison needs to be made on the children’s area, not in general. Material is taught and learned in a different matter, depending on where you are.
Standardized Testing

I think it is very important to explain the importance of standardized testing to parents. But I think there are multiple ways of going about explaining it. For example in private I would most likely break down the testing for their child and ways we could help their child succeed. But when explaining to a group of parents, I would make sure I would go through the basics of standardized testing. To begin, I would explain the difference between measurement and assessment testing hopefully making the concept of a standardized testing easier to understand. That standardized tests are given to see similarities and differences between students in different classrooms, schools, and cities or states are performing in relation to each other. Next, I would tell them about the different types of standardized tests (achievement, diagnostic, Intelligence, and Aptitude). Parents would also need to know the accountability of the test. I would also tell them that the tests are not only assessing the students but the teachers as well.
As part of your discussion post, write some key ideas you would share with parents about standardized testing.
Standardized testing is used to see how students and groups stack up next to a “norm”, or a national average for whatever subject is being measured. Different skills could be being measured and in different ways, for example a citation referenced test measures mastery of a skill. When you are accessing the information associated with the scores you collect you are not just collecting information on the students preformance but also you can be collecting information about a teachers personal ability to teach certain material. Every score is broken down usually on a bell curve, some do poorly some do nearly pefect but most students generally do average. This curve is referred to as “normal distribution”. A raw score is the amount or questions answered correctly and this number cannot be interpreted.
As part of your discussion post, write some key ideas you would share with parents about standardized testing.
• When explaining standardized tests to a group of parents there are several things that I would want to present and make clear to them. First, I would explain the difference between measurement and assessment. Also, I would explain the concept of a standardized test to them in simple terms. A test given to a large sample of students under uniform conditions, and graded in a uniform way. This means that standardized tests are used to see how students in different classrooms, in different schools, and in different cities or states are performing in relation to each other. Next, I would tell them about the different types of standardized tests, including achievement, diagnostic, Intelligence, and Aptitude. To help them understand how to interpret each type of test I would explain certain concepts such as the norm and how a student’s score is compared. Also, parents would need to know the descriptive statistics and what mean, mode, and median implicate. Parents would also need to know some problems with the test such as accountability. When students have to take high stakes tests often teacher will “teach to the test” which can make learning boring. Also, another problem is that standardized tests are used to grade or assess teachers.

I would tell parents that standardized tests are used for measurement and assessment of their child in terms of where they are with their academic performance. The data can be used to determine where a student may be excelling or where a student may need some help. A lot of times they say that the standardized test scores reflect upon the teacher’s ability to teach but I disagree with that notion. Problems with testing is that there are many factors that can lead to bad test scores such as anxiety, being ill, emotions, etc. Because these tests are of importance a student can be held back for not passing a part of the test even if they did not pass simply because of one of the reasons I stated above. I have always had test anxiety and even though I maintained a 4.0 through high school my standardized test scores were never where I wanted to them, so maybe I am biased, however I do not think that standardized tests are fair indications of a student’s academic abilities.
I agree with you, and I did very well on standardized tests.
Standardized tests are used to compare the student’s score to the average of their grade, which would be considered the “norm.” In order to understand the scores, parents will need to understand percentiles, which is a ranking that compares the student’s scores with all of the other scores. This will show them how their child did in comparison to all the others who took the test.

These scores are used to determine if the individual is at their grade level. It will help to determine if they could take advanced classes, and what their individual strengths and weaknesses are. Standardized tests are also used to see how students of a particular teacher are scoring compared to others.

There are some issues with standardized testing, however. Because these are very important tests, students can be held back or not allowed to graduate based solely on their scores. This could be a problem for students who are very strong in the test-taking process. These tests also can determine if I school or teacher is rewarded for their scores.
Yes, there are high stakes associated with standardized tests, such as whether students get to move forward with their peers in schools or whether a teacher gets to keep his/her job or get a raise.
