Gaining respect for your students can only happen if you respect them as well. Your students will want to listen to you and will be more motivated do their work if they respect you.

What are some times you have experienced in your career as a student where time was wasted?

I feel my time was wasted whenever I was recently in a class where the professor mostly read out straight out of the book, barely used any teaching tools or methods to really engage us. Most of the class period was spent listening to him lecture, and not even at an audible and clear level.

What are some learning activities (not busy work) that could have been done instead?

Instead of listening to the professor lecture straight from the book, that we could have read ourselves, our time would have been put to better use by utilizing the materials in real life examples, having active class discussion, or activities to apply the information.

What resources do you have in your life?

Resources that I have at my disposal to use as a teacher are multimedia sources like the internet, books, and even movies and television. I could even ask advice and guidance from other professionals. These things will provide creative ideas for fun and effective learning.

What are some principles that you would like to have in your classroom?

Principles that I would really want to enforce in my classroom are responsibility, questioning, and respect for self and others. These virtues would create a positive atmosphere for both me as a teacher and my students.
What are some times you have experienced in your career as a student where time was wasted?

The thing that bothers me most is when a professor or teacher takes up valuable classroom time to read aloud a syllabus or packet of information or power point that we will have access to outside of the class and can do on our own time. Students our age do not need slides read aloud to us when we can go on Blackboard or whatever it may be and have access to the same information. It seems as though the same outcome could be accomplished by passing out the packet then ending class.

What are some learning activities (not busy work) that could have been done instead?

More time could be spent on expanding or if basic information was given to read at the end of the previous class so in the new class the professor could start right in on what is being covered and even have to opportunity to dig deeper. Information that the student has full access to outside of class should be supplemental to a bigger picture. This could be anything for a partner/ group in class assignment based on understanding of the information to an interactive presentation or game.

What resources do you have in your life?

As a student in todays world we have infinite resources. There is little information that a student would have too go to far out of their way to gain access to with all the technology we have. But in addition to that friends and family can often serve as even greater resources. My parents both values education greatly and are always there to offer guidance that cant be pulled off a website, their personal understanding of what it is like to be in my shoe at every point of my educational journey. That support and understanding for me is my greatest resource.

What are some principles that you would like to have in your classroom?

All the best functioning classrooms I have been in did not survive on a strict list of recited rules and rituals. Come to class ready to learn and engage yourself, my classroom will be a safe place where you leave all outside concerns at the door and come in focused on you and figuring out how youre going to be the best version of yourself given whatever circumstance everyday in my class. In addition when appropriate feeling comfortable enough to seek help in any form. As long as you are reaching to improve yourself and become the person you want and deserve to be and helping others in the best ways you know how, you are succeeding in my mind.
Oh boy do I agree with you about reading aloud stuff that students have available to them.
I think going over expectations and the syllabi is a waste of time, especially on the higher levels. Everyone can read. You can give it out, but only go over the high points. But going through everything line by line is time consuming and the students have stopped listening and it is hard to bring them back to the subject matter at hand because they are so bored.

What are some learning activities (not busy work) that could have been done instead?

In my classroom I do not go over the syllabi. We play games at the beginning that introduce each other and the concepts of the class. At the same time a lesson of some sort is learned. Once we played a game where the students tossed a ball in the air. If it was tossed towards you, you had to give your name and major (college students). If you messed up, you were allowed to be saved if you could repeat something that was learned in one of your other courses. Of course others in the class has to agree, but the students loved it and had fun. It helped them to begin to remember what they had previously learned.

What resources do you have in your life?

There are so many resources out there today. But I think in all of our modern technology, we forget the most important resource of all; those who have experienced what we are going through now. Yes the internet is nice. We can research and get ideas and information on just about any topic in our classrooms. But sometimes it just it better to talk with someone who has been doing it for awhile and still love what they do. You see the impact that they are having on the children and the way the children respond to them. Just spending time observing and talking with them can make a big chance in how you handle your classroom. The knowledge that they share can impact you more than a book or article that you read because you know their method has been tried and proving to work.

What are some principles that you would like to have in your classroom?

My principles are pretty simple. 1. Respect for themselves and others. I will not allow students to talk down about themselves or others. 2. Enter the classroom to learn at least 1 thing that day. It does not have to be big, but something they can take away from the lesson. 3. Keep an open mind about the subject. By keeping an open mind, it allows the student and the teacher to learn the material a little better. 4. Everyone in the classroom has something they can learn from each other, including the teacher. No one is so smart that they know it all.
That game is a great idea--I might steal it! I agree with you about syllabi.
What are some times you have experienced in your career as a student where time was wasted?

I feel like I really did not think of time being wasted until college courses. Coming from a learning background of having to be engaged and interacting with the learning to fully understand, I had a hard time learning to make the most out of classes that were mainly lecture based. When the teacher just talks at the front of the class, I feel that I didn’t learn to my full potential.

What are some learning activities (not busy work) that could have been done instead?

Although I felt lecture courses to be a wasted time they do not have to be. For example, the teacher could have one day set for a lecture day each week but the other day the class meets the teacher could have the class review what was taught in the lecture by assigning presentations or PowerPoint projects. Thus still making her point come across by also getting the students involved in their understanding of the material.

What resources do you have in your life?

I think to have the greatest support system I could ever ask for. Beginning with the amazing love and support system I have from my family and friends that are always there for me in helping me succeed. Also in being from a small town and having past teachers, coaches, and elders all rooting for my success in life’s journey. Thus leading to my present teachers and coaches at Capital University that are always a call or email away. Other than the supporting resources in my life I also am blessed to like in a forever changing world in technology where now I have a resource with me all the time with having the Internet on my phone where I can go to places such as Goggle to search things.

What are some principles that you would like to have in your classroom?

As stated earlier I am a strong believer in hands-on activities and learning through interacting in the classroom. But I also want to provide my students with a balance of learning settings. For example having activities set for certain days where they will learn through group settings as well as individual assignments. I want my classroom to be a place of safe comfort and a place of free expression.
There is a model of teaching where the equivalent of lecture (the kinds of things you have been doing in this class) is what students do as "homework" and class time is spent in application of the material, such as the projects you suggest or other hands-on activities. My teacher and professors and classmates are all such wonderful resources because we are all so different. And because of my education, I am able to get internship and job connections. There is also social networking and the internet in general, which is a really great resource as long as I find reliable sources.

Respect is a huge thing for me, which was mentioned. I know I cant force respect for me, but I can respect my students and respect who they are and where they come from. If I understand that, I will have compassion on them and I will be patient with them. And if I can accomplish that, I can hope my students will see that I care and that they will return the respect.
• In my psychology class where our professor mostly just lectured us, there are a few learning activities that he could have utilized.
For my past two years in college, I feel like a lot of my time has been wasted. I remember a time in one of my UC classes freshman year that we were going to watch a movie, and the professor couldn’t get it to work. It took around 15 minutes to get it to work. It was so frustrating to me. I kept thinking that he should have come to class 10 minutes early and figured it out then. Almost all of the times that my time was wasted have involved technology.

What are some learning activities (not busy work) that could have been done instead?

For my particular example, the class I was in was a global awareness class, and our final exam included a map, and we had to label a ton of countries. Something he could have done would be to pull out a map and have us identify those countries. Geography has always been something I am very poor at, so I feel as if hearing everyone else point out the countries would have been very helpful to me.

What resources do you have in your life?

The biggest resource I have in my life is support. I have a wonderful family, and although we may not get along 100% of the time, and we do disagree on some things, we are always there for each other. They are the only people in my life that I can consistently count on to be there for me in times of need. I also have the resource of education. I’m one of the fortunate people who can go to college. I also have physical resources, like food and an apartment, which I do not need to worry about and can focus on my education. I also have access to the internet, which is very helpful in my day-to-day life.

What are some principles that you would like to have in your classroom?

Two of the biggest principles I would like to have in my classroom are respect and trust.
In my career as a student there have been many times where time has been wasted, especially in high school. There were many times where I have had to do “busy work” which were difficult packets with question after question of things that had nothing to do with the tests that were given in class. It would be a lot more beneficial to use that time to prepare for the tests or get other things done rather than use your time to do something that does not benefit you in anyway.

What resources do you have in your life?

The way things are today; there are a ton of resources out there. The Internet provides a multitude of resources as there are many websites out there for teacher and Google gives you access to all of them. Another good resource is Pinterest, it has so many ideas and you can use it to network with other teachers and share ideas with each other. In addition, I know a few teachers and administrators who are family and family friends. Also, the teachers who I grew up with always told me that they would always be a resource for me if I ever needed anything. Another good resource would be books and videos and all kinds of multimedia.

What are some principles that you would like to have in your classroom?

Some principles I would like to have in my classroom are actually the principles I grew up with in my elementary school. They are the core virtues, which include: Compassion, Respect, Perseverance, Responsibility, Honesty, Giving and Self-Discipline. I think that these pretty much cover all of the bases and these are all things that kids should know and understand. These core virtues were all visible inside of the classrooms and in each hallway of the building there are “street names” of each of the core virtues. These really helped maintain classroom management for the teachers because all of the students understood that if they broke any of the core virtues then there would be consequences for your actions.
