In grade school, my mom would help me make sure I had everything packed for school and I really didn't know how to stay organized on my own. In high school, my principal, Mr. Tone, created something he called "The Tone Ten" which was a list of things you should make sure are organized before you go to sleep every night (and should only take about 10 minutes to do). At the beginning of high school, I thought Mr. Tone's list was silly. It wasn't until after I forgot a huge project on my kitchen table that I realized that I should take the time to get organized and feel prepared for school. I think college is the biggest test of someone's organization skills because it's a huge step toward independence and you have a lot more responsibility than you did in high school. I still have to admit that I'm not the best at staying organized, but I know when I become a teacher, I will really need to be as organized as I can. I have started using the calender on my phone to remind me when to pay bills and when projects are due. I also use the Mint app to stay on top of my finances. I never realized how much I spent on eating out until I looked at the app. I have cut down on my spending and feel much more relieved to know how much money I have in my checking and saving accounts.

I want to help my students become organized at a young age because it will help them in every stage of their life. I believe a calendar is the most important tool to being organized because it can hold anything from your plans to “to-do” lists or shopping lists. For years, I used a paper calendar, which benefitted me because I am a visual learner. Last summer, I converted to an electronic calendar, which has had its ups and downs. I like how it is available, even if I lose my phone, but it is hard to look at the whole week in one screen. Therefore, I would suggest both types of calendars and have the person chose what’s best for them. In addition, I would suggest keeping their environment organized, which is something easier said than done! Making a regular time to organize small and important space, such as a desk, will help make life seem a little less hectic. In order to do this, however, I think the person needs to have some discipline and motivation to want to become more organized, but making a “to-do” list and giving yourself a deadline may help, too.
If you are blessed with a natural ability to be organized, then spend some time looking for resources you could use to help others who are struggling.
If others are struggling, I would suggest that they would use a calendar or daily planner to become organized. At the beginning of the week, I write down my work schedules, homework assignments and other extracurricular activities. Keeping in then, in an always accessible place like my backpack assures me that I will always have it close and will not lose it. Other people should utilize this technique in order to stay on top of everything. I also write little reminders and notes in my cell phone which I am never without. Of course, having a smart phone with plenty of additional features is helpful to anyone. To a person just starting these habits, it is important to make an effort to build and solidify these habits.
If you are blessed with a natural ability to be organized, then spend some time looking for resources you could use to help others who are struggling. Which resources seem most logical to you? Why?

I am fairly organized in a lot of different areas whether school or cleanliness. I am a huge believer in “everything has a place and everything is in it’s place”. I also am a huge believer in planners and lists. Although, I have noticed that the more I am a slave to those lists and planners, the more stressed I am so I have been laying off of those a little. When talking about organization in terms of class/school, I think a lot of that comes from being motivated. I if I don’t see the bigger goal behind what I am working on, than I am not motivated and therefore unorganized. I am glad you mentioned that executive functioning can be related to ADHD, aspergers, etc. but that the two do not always go together because I found that more and more, people are just diagnosing and medicating kids to “fix” this problem instead of helping them get organized and teaching them to be motivated (which we talked about in an earlier lesson- how we self motivate). I’m not sure what resources I could offer to someone because I am pretty old fashion and not many people are anymore, but I would suggest a planner and keeping their surroundings organized because for me, it’s hard to focus if I am trying to focus among chaos and dirt. I would also recommend motivation in the form of a reward after doing x amount of work or maybe even mapping out why completing an assignment is beneficial for their future. For people who are more technologically inclined, I am sure there are endless apps for their phones they could download.
If you are blessed with a natural ability to be organized, then spend some time looking for resources you could use to help others who are struggling.
I am not an organized person by nature. I’ve always had a lot going on in my life and find it hard to keep up with it all. I try to use several methods in order to help myself keep it all together. The first method I use is my smartphone. It has helped tremendously. I put everything in it. I use the notepad app to remind myself of things I need to do. I use my calendar, that is linked to my google calendar, for all of my important dates. I set the reminder on it so that it reminds at least 24 hours before hand that I need to do something. I found an android app that allows me to make a to-do list that I can add to or take away from as needed. Sometimes I just cross the item off the list so that it still shows up. Since I keep my phone with me at all times, this is the best option for me.

I use my outlook calendar at work to enter appointments that I need to remember. The reminder goes off and reminds me that I need to call someone by a certain time or be somewhere at a certain time. I’ve tried the planner, but I sometimes leave it at home or in my car. Since my phone can do so much and I can sync my phone with my business partners, it is the best option out there for all of us.
I personally am not the most organized person there ever was so this is something I am looking into for myself. In the past there have been things that have worked and some that have not. What does not work for me is to try to remember dates times and assignments as opposed to writing them down. But in addition to that getting into the habbit of writing everything down does not come naturally for me and often if I do I end up writing down different things in different places and being unsure where I wrote it down, causing me to have to go back to square one, just trying to remember what that particular date or page number was.

Now on the other hand what does work for me and what I believe could work for students that are like myself is keeping a calendar in your phone or an assignment app could be a great solution for some. It doesn’t make sense to continue to force yourself into a habit

that may work great for a lot of people such as a written planner if it just does not benefit you or your own habits.
I would say I have been blessed with the ability to be organized. Granted this is more because I have the tendency to be a neat freak and yet my procrastination trumps some of my organization, but I am organized. I make note and write everything down when it comes to my schoolwork or important dates to remember. My school planner and calendar is my best friend every semester when it comes to remembering things that need to be done.

I feel like I remember better when I write things down but in today’s world of technology that seems like a thing in the past.
I think a smart phone would be extremely helpful for people who are unable to stay organized. Phones come with calendars, and you can set reminders and alarms. There are also tons of apps available to help with organization.
I do have the ability to be organized…when I want to be. When I really need to be organized I am on it. I tend to lack in the ability to focus area for other reasons, which can affect my organization. Resources that seem logical that could help others could be so many things. Cell phones, computers, tablets, ipads, and ipods for example are some of the many things that people can utilize for organization. The problem that arises with these things is that they contain millions of distractions. Speaking in terms of your students, for example, if you allow them to use these things to stay organized it would have to be closely monitored so that students are not doing things they shouldn’t be doing. If it is not monitored then it would be much less logical to use these resources.

A system that I thought really worked (for elementary) was what my elementary school did which started when I was in the 5th grade because a new teacher brought this to the classrooms. At the beginning of the year the school provided every student with a daily planner. We had a homework folder with one side labeled parents and one side labeled with your name. The side with your name was where all of your homework that you were expected to complete for the next day went and on the parents side was where any papers that needed to be read by parents went (that side would have to be empty the next day). Every day at the end of the school day we took about 5-10 minutes to review what our homework was for that evening. We had to place that homework into our folder and then write in our planners what the homework was and any other details that we needed to know about that homework or what to read for that night if there was a reading assignment. Not only did we have to do our homework, our parents had to sign our planners to indicate that we got out our planners, looked at the assignment, did the assignment and put a checkmark or crossed it out to show that the assignment was finished. Everyday we would turn in our homework and our planners and the teacher would check to make sure that all of the planners were signed. Looking back on it, it was pretty funny because one time my dad signed by planner “bugs bunny” and I had no idea. I was completely mortified when my teacher called me up to ask me why “bugs bunny” signed my planner, my teacher thought it was funny but I definitely did not at the time! Anyway, I think this system really drives home organizational skills especially with planners because it is something that can be used throughout your entire schooling career, I still use one to this day. Also, having parents sign the planners I think it is a great way for teachers to ensure parent cooperation and easily recognize when there might be parent issues if a parent is not involved or is not around when a student doesn’t get their planner signed. For young kids I think this is a very logical way of helping students with organizational skills and if you use repetition like the wiki says with checking planners it can really develop good organizational skills.
Your dad has quite a sense of humor!!
I do believe that I am blessed with executive functioning and have the ability to be organized. As a teacher I will most likely encounter students who struggle with aspects of executive functioning and will have to provide them with resources to succeed. If I was teaching older students I could have them use their cell phone calendars or just traditional assignment notebooks to stay organized. Younger students could use a take home folder to be reviewed nightly with their parents/guardians. Also, I liked the Pocket Mod link on the wiki because of its accessibility and ease of making/using. I would have to build habits and sustain each student’s organization. I could set aside time each day for students to get themselves organized. As a teacher I would need to focus on encouraging my students and focus on what they are succeeding in and not what they are struggling with. I think that a take home folder is very logical because it is a place for students to put all of their assignments and things that they need to get done. By having their parents review it with them (and provide a signature that they did) helps make sure that students are doing their best to stay organized at home as well.
