I don't think teachers should rely on videos to teach their class, but I think it should be more of a reward for the students doing well on their tests and assignments. I think documentaries are a great way to learn about a topic because they are educational and engaging. I am really impressed with the selection on Documentary Heaven. There are a lot of great documentaries on there that I could see teachers showing in a classroom. I think teaching history would be one of the best topics to show a documentary in because the students will be able to listen to historians describe events much better than I can. I would have the students write a short paper after watching the documentary to show what they learned.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61082364","dateCreated":"1355349772","smartDate":"Dec 12, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"laeling1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/laeling1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/capitaledpsych.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61082364"},"dateDigested":1532724583,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Lianna Aeling response ","description":" In teaching an art class, at any age level, there are a plethora of resources, besides books, that could help students learn. \nOne thing that I will be teaching in the future, as an early childhood major would be vowels and consonants. There are many learning materials that I can utilize to teach this subject, other than textbooks. I could write sentences on the board and have them break down each word and analyze the sentence word by word. Another way to have my students practice this, as well as other language arts concepts, is create flash cards to help the students with any homework they have to do at home. In addition, I could make a vowel, consonant game. I could have them choose a book from the class and take for home and break down each sentence of the story. For additional practice I could give my students some personal work time in class that they could create their own story about their interests and break down the words with consonants and vowels as well as other literary terms.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61009414","dateCreated":"1354651702","smartDate":"Dec 4, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"mgreathousemarshall","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mgreathousemarshall","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/capitaledpsych.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61009414"},"dateDigested":1532724583,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"MGreathouse-Responses","description":"Think of something you will be teaching, whether to children or to fellow employees. \nAn example of something I could teach in a classroom is teaching shapes. Materials you could use to teach this other than by using a text book could involve using shape cut out and using them to form into shapes of different figures. You could also should this by doing a lesson on symmetry and thus having students complete to second half or reflection or all types of different shapes, pine trees, stars, or even just an oval for a younger group of students. Students could find shapes at hope in household objects and and use them to create different types of objects and showing what shapes they included.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"60813050","dateCreated":"1352747356","smartDate":"Nov 12, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"cbpries","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cbpries","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/capitaledpsych.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/60813050"},"dateDigested":1532724583,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Carly Pries - Response","description":"Seeing as I will be teaching students with physical and mental disabilities, I think that the most important learning tools that I could use would be assistive technology devices. I feel that it is my job as a teacher to help students with mental disabilities that inhibit their academic success to find tools such as assistive technology devices that can really change the way that they learn. Every disability is different so not all devices will work for every student. That is why I feel that it is also my job as a teacher to use resources, such as the program at Ohio State that I talked about in the professional development tab, to help find assistive technology devices for students that really need a new direction in their learning.
\nOn an employment level, at my job at Pink whenever our managers need to teach the employees new material for working they don\u2019t use textbooks or print they use what was mentioned on the wiki and always show us training videos so that we can actually see what needs to be done. Later in life, I think I would like to be a college professor, teaching about these mental illnesses, which, to me, are extremely interesting. Unfortunately, text books do not make them so interesting. Also, text books in college are extremely expensive, and some students do not even bother buying them. Because of this, I would not use a text book if it wasn\u2019t required by the university. I think that I would use a lot of videos and documentaries in order to teach about mental illnesses. I believe that it would be easier to learn about this topic if students are able to actually see the signs of mental illnesses. I would also find some sort of online book or resource which presents the students with signs and symptoms, and the student would have to figure out which mental illness they relate to.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"57927602","body":"One huge problem with textbooks, aside from the ones that you mention, is that they do not adequately represent the perspective of people with mental illnesses. When I set up the unit on disabilities for this class (Teaching All Students Part 1), I opted for videos that clearly represented the perspective of people with disabilities rather than a textbook written by an able-bodied person. To me, this makes a huge difference. There are so many sites on the web where people with various kinds of mental illnesses discuss their lives. One that you might want to look at is crazymeds.us, which is a website on the drugs used to treat mental illnesses, from the perspective of the people who have to take them. It is clearly pro-medication but also deals with the many side effects and the challenges of finding the right combination of meds for a particular person. The person who set up the site is a good writer with a wry sense of humor, so I enjoy reading it for that alone.","dateCreated":"1351864609","smartDate":"Nov 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"COCapitalU","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/COCapitalU","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"60486204","dateCreated":"1349985756","smartDate":"Oct 11, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"arutsky","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/arutsky","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/capitaledpsych.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/60486204"},"dateDigested":1532724584,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Andrew Rutsky Response","description":"Think of something you will be teaching, whether to children or to fellow employees.
