People with disabilities are able to use the computer the without having to move their hands or talk. I think this will be useful in my classrooms when I teach special education. Students will feel more independent and will have more confidence because they will be able to search the computer on their own (or with a little help). I downloaded it to my computer and think it is great! I'm sure it would work even better when you don't use it on a laptop. I'm not sure if all computers in schools have cameras but hopefully the schools would be able to get few so special needs students could use this free program.
I chose to download Camera Mouse and I was simply amazed. This download enables you to use you webcam in conjunction with your mouse and allow you to use and control your mouse with your head. You are also able to click by dwelling on a certain spot. The first thing that came to mind after first trying this was how exciting this is for people who do not have control or ability to use their hand or arms but still have a desire to use all that a computer and the internet can offer without having to depend on anyone, or have to wait for someone to help them look fir the things they want or need to see.
With not being the most tech savvy person I was a little hesitant on downloading the camera mouse, but after I downloaded it and started to explore I found it as an awesome tool. It is a way of using movement to operate the computer mouse to navigate and explore the computer. This would be so extremely useful for students in a early childhood or intervention setting that want to be able to use a computer but have very limited fine motor skills. It’s definitely not as easy to use as a normal mouse or keyboard. A few ideas I came up with are as follows:

Videos- I could youtube videos of her to showcase who she was and how she created. Or I could even make my own video to present the info to the class- it might be refreshing for them to watch a video as oppose to me just sitting in front of them. Plus there is a lot more I could do in a video than in the classroom such as travel places.

Here is pretty good video (since she is older there isn’t too much footage of her): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS--tPNj51o

Dressing up- This could be really fun. I had a history teacher who dressed up to teach us about the civil war. Perhaps I could dress up in time appropriate clothing to give them an idea of her time period and life.

Reading a book- There are many good books about artists and one in particular about Clementine that I’ve read before (“Art from her Heart”). I could spend 15 minutes reading to them to present info to them.

Passing around “artifacts”: Most of Clementine’s art was done on found object because it was cheaper and even free. I could pass around “artifacts” that Clementine may have used to paint on.
For this assignment, I chose to download the camera mouse. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but I was extremely impressed with this tool. It took me a minute to get the hang of it at first (I couldn’t figure out how to click on stuff), but I easily figured everything out. I think this would be an amazing tool for people who have anything wrong with their hands. It’s definitely not as easy to use as a normal mouse, but I think if you were to use it enough, you would get the hang of it. I also think that it would be difficult to click on something small, as the mouse is a bit shaky.
Download some software from one of the resources below. Explore it and write a brief review so that other people can know what it might be good for and its strengths and weaknesses.

In exploring the camera mouse, which is a way of navigating the mouse on the computer using a specified feature on your face, I found it to be a very useful tool especially in the field I am planning to go into, special needs. It is a way of using movement to operate the computer mouse to navigate on the computer. This is especially useful for students that want to be able to use a computer but have very limited or no use of their hands. This is a great tool because despite their disability, they can still participate in using computers like everything else. I would say that the only weakness is that the keyboard is not as easily accessible as a regular keyboard but it is still useable and is a very helpful tool for a student who cannot operate a mouse by hand.
Take an idea in one format (e.g., text, music, etc.) and adapt it to another format. What did you gain or lose in the adaptation? How might using both means enhance the sharing of information?

• As a future teacher I will be teaching lessons on science. For example I will most likely teach a lesson on the solar system. The original format I will choose will be a diagram of the solar system (pictured below). Due to the fact that I will have a diverse population of students in my classroom I will need to adapt this information into different formats. First, I could provide options for perception other than visual such as music (a song about the solar system) or tactile (physical model in the classroom). Also, I could provide options for language by providing alternate terminology for word that my students may not understand or be familiar with within the lesson. I will have to provide my students with options for comprehension by giving them background information on the solar system and highlighting the main ideas for some students. I could give my students a project to research and present a planet of their choice within our solar system. This would give them options for self-regulation. By making their project graded I could sustain their effort and persistence. I don’t think that I would really need to recruit my student’s interest because as a young child the solar system was always pretty interesting.

• By adapting this diagram to song or to a physical model I don’t think that I would necessarily lose anything. Depending on how I adapt the diagram I would be presenting the same information in a different way. By providing multiple options for overall learning I believe that my students will be able to gain certain information from different approached depending on what type of learner each student is. By using more than one means of presenting the same information I can be more sure that my students are going to be interested, be engaged, and learn the material.
Being able to present the same information in multiple ways is a critical skill for reaching as many students as possible.
